Will Israel open a second front in Lebanon? The situation in the Middle East adds variables.

Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced that its attack plan against Hezbollah in Lebanon had been approved, which triggered deep concern of the international community about the escalation of the conflict between Israel and Lebanon. People are worried that this may trigger a full-scale war between the two countries, thus threatening the stability of the Middle East.

Recently, Shyam, southern Lebanon, was attacked by Israeli air, and the picture of smoke billowing was spread to the world through the media. Although Israel’s military operations in the Gaza Strip have not fully achieved the set goals, whether it will choose to open up a new front in Lebanon has become the focus of attention. Analysts pointed out that there is hesitation in Israel, especially considering the unstable state of the current government and the political bet of Prime Minister Netanyahu.

A video of a drone released by Hezbollah in Lebanon shows that its drone goes deep into northern Israel and monitors its military facilities, which is regarded by Israeli public opinion as a "national shame day". This incident is regarded as a fuse that may aggravate tensions. However, it is still a question whether Israel can further expand the scope of the conflict with domestic consensus and support. The international community, especially the United States and the United Nations will keep a close eye on Israel’s next move and tend to avoid the further spread of the conflict.

With the escalation of border tensions, the leader of Hezbollah in Lebanon, Nasrallah, warned that if a full-scale conflict broke out with Israel, the whole territory of Israel would face threats. In contrast, Hezbollah has nearly 100,000 troops, far exceeding Hamas in Gaza, and its strength can not be underestimated, and it is inextricably linked with other Middle Eastern countries. Therefore, even for Israel, it is not easy to quickly defeat Hezbollah in Lebanon. This gamble is related to Netanyahu’s political career and even Israel’s national destiny.

What is even more worrying is that the outbreak of all-out war may involve many regional countries, including Hamas, Syrian non-governmental armed forces and Iraqi militia forces, which indicates that the Middle East may face a large-scale military conflict and add more uncertainty to the already turbulent regional situation.
