A strong earthquake struck the sea near Fukushima Prefecture at 23: 36 local time on the 16th (22: 36 Beijing time). On the 17th, Japan Meteorological Agency raised the magnitude of the earthquake from 7.3 to 7.4, and the focal depth was revised from 60 km to 57 km. According to the Japan Broadcasting Association, the earthquake has killed a man in Soma City, Fukushima Prefecture, and injured 92 people in Fukushima Prefecture, Miyagi Prefecture and Iwate Prefecture.

According to Zhan Kongchao, Consul General of the Japanese Embassy in China, there are no reports of casualties of Japanese citizens in the earthquake.
After the earthquake, the Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning to the coastal areas of Fukushima Prefecture and Miyagi Prefecture. Tsunamis 30 cm and 20 cm high were observed in Ishinomaki Port and Sendai Port in Miyagi Prefecture, and tsunami 20 cm high was observed in Soma Port in Fukushima Prefecture. As of 5: 00 on the 17th, the tsunami warning was completely lifted.

The staff of Japan Meteorological Agency said at a press conference in the early morning of 17th that an earthquake with a magnitude of 6 might still occur in the coming week. People should be alert to secondary disasters such as house collapse, landslides and avalanches, and try to stay away from dangerous environment.
The earthquake felt strong and shook for a long time. The largest earthquakes observed in Fukushima Prefecture and Miyagi Prefecture reached 6. The earthquake intensity set by Japan Meteorological Agency has 10 grades, from weak to strong, which are 0 to 4, 5 weak, 5 strong, 6 weak, 6 strong and 7 strong respectively.

Affected by the earthquake, 16 carriages of the Northeast Shinkansen "Shan Yan 223" train derailed between Fukushima Station and Baishi Zangwang Station. Fortunately, no one was injured. Japan Railway East Japan Company announced that due to the derailment accident, the section from Nasu Yanyuan Station to Morioka Station of the Tohoku Shinkansen was suspended on the 17th.
