When the "hand-torn steel", which is as thin as cicada’s wings and can be easily torn by hand, appeared, people associated him with such labels as "No.1 in the world", "Breaking the monopoly" and "Filling the domestic gap", thus opening the story of writing China precision industrial manufacturing.
Open the research and development without rice
Duan Haojie is a native of Shanxi.
After graduating from college in 2011, he was assigned to TISCO Precision Belt Company as a production worker. At that time, the technology of "hand-torn steel" was monopolized by Japan, the United States and other countries for a long time, and the price of a piece of A4-sized "hand-torn steel" was 400 yuan. Even if the price is so expensive, the domestic demand for related materials often falls into the situation of "cooking without rice".
Faced with the urgent need for high-tech basic materials in major national strategies and key emerging fields, in 2016, TISCO’s "hand-torn steel" innovative R&D team was established.
However, it is not an easy task to make "hand-torn steel". It is necessary to ensure steel purity, production line technology, control level, high-grade surface accuracy and product performance. These are like mountains in front of everyone.
Facing the difficulties in the industry and challenging thorny issues is undoubtedly a hot potato for many people. After all, before this, the core technology of "hand-tearing steel" has never been systematically studied by any team in China.
However, as the employee who is most likely to roll out 0.02mm "hand-torn steel" in China iron and steel enterprises, Duan Haojie became one of the first 15 R&D team members of TISCO and began to grow together with "hand-torn steel" for five years.
Repeated failures challenge the limits.
As thin as cicada wings, the thickness is only 0.02 mm "hand-torn steel".
Shanxi people like to eat noodles, rolling noodles, waking noodles, mixing noodles and cutting noodles … … In all the processes, rolling noodles is the most important, and the thickness of noodles is directly related to the taste and appearance.
In order to make "hand-torn steel", four difficulties must be overcome: rolling, annealing, high-grade surface control and performance control. In the whole process, the rolling of the first process is the most important link. Just like rolling, the steel strip is thinned from thick to thin, which directly affects the thickness and quality of "hand-torn steel".
As the person in charge of production, looking at the two precision rolling mills in the workshop, how to install the rollers, how to set the middle spacing and let them "roll" thin and tough steel has become the most difficult problem in front of Duan Haojie.
"There are six choices for 20 rollers corresponding to different widths, and five choices for taper. Each taper corresponds to five different taper lengths, and at the same time, different convexity choices need to be taken into account. The ratio of so many variables means more than 20,000 possibilities. " Duan Haojie said that in all complicated rolling processes, broken belt is the most "collapse".
At 9: 00 am on December 10, 2017, the rolling mill carried out 0.02 mm piercing rolling according to the predetermined plan. At 11: 40, the threading was completed. When the rolling production reached more than 100 meters, there was a loud bang, and the steel strip was instantly broken. Unlike the thick plate that broke the belt in two, the thin plate was broken into powder at that time.
In Duan Haojie’s office, there is a stack of work notes more than 1 meter high, which records all the research and development data and rolling methods of "hand-torn steel".
In this way, from 0.1 mm to 0.05 mm, and then to 0.03 mm, the foil is getting thinner every day. After 711 tests, 175 equipment problems and 452 process problems were overcome. At the beginning of 2018, a 0.02 mm ultra-thin stainless steel precision foil that challenged the limit, broke foreign monopoly and filled domestic gaps was finally successfully developed and made its debut in the world.
Once this kind of steel that can be torn by hand came out, it broke the people’s inherent impression of steel, became an instant hit and became popular on the Internet.
Strive for the spire and look forward to the future
In fact, no one is born as a "schoolmaster". For Duan Haojie, it is common practice to take the factory as his home and the data as his companion.
At 7 o’clock every morning, Duan Haojie, wearing a red helmet and blue tooling, will quickly walk into the No.8 workshop of Jingdai Company. Here, he spent the most stressful but also the most brilliant decade of his life.
In the interview, Duan Haojie said that his favorite word is "toughness". In his view, "tenacity" is a combination of time and mental effort. It not only has flexible wisdom from softness to rigidity, but also represents his own inner pursuit, which is the spirit he yearns for.

Without first-class skilled workers, there would be no first-class manufacturing industry. The breakthrough of "tearing steel by hand" is a microcosm of the profound transformation and structural optimization of China’s steel industry.

In September 2020, Duan Haojie and his team members successfully mass-produced the "hand-torn steel" with a thickness of only 0.015mm again, breaking the previous record of "hand-torn steel" with a thickness of 0.02mm..
