Liu Wenxi was born in Shengzhou City, Zhejiang Province in 1933. He entered Shanghai Yucai School in 1950, Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts in 1953, and worked in Xi ‘an Academy of Fine Arts after graduation in 1958. He used to be the vice chairman of China Artists Association and the president of Xi ‘an Academy of Fine Arts, and now he is the honorary president of Xi ‘an Academy of Fine Arts, the president of Loess Painting School Art Research Institute and the chairman of China Contemporary Painting School Friendship Association.
Liu Wenxi has created a large number of works with the story of Mao Zedong as the theme in his life, and he is the creator of the fifth set of portraits of Mao Zedong in RMB. At present, 5 yuan, 10 yuan, 50 yuan and Mao Zedong on RMB 100 are all from his hands. Therefore, he is called a painter who is "watched by 1.5 billion people the most".
